1st grader bake sale fundraiser hopes to cover some costs of arson at school

ROBERTS, WI (WTAQ) - Out of something bad often comes something great.

In Roberts, where the Saint Croix Central Elementary School had an arson fire on April 30th, one of its first-graders – 7-year-old Miranda Halverson – came up with the idea of having a bake sale to raise what the school needs to get everything fixed.

She figured that $1,000 would do it.

Actually, the damage was one-and-a-half million dollars.

Still, Miranda’s idea of a benefit bake sale should be a big hit when it’s held tomorrow from 9-to-4 at the Walmart in Hudson.

If there’s anything left, the sale will continue Sunday.

Miranda’s mother, Amanda Halverson, worries that she and her daughter won’t have enough to serve everyone.

A bakery and a bagel shop are pledging baked goods – and the family was planning to make brownies and Rice Krispie bars.

Miranda’s mother expects she will be the chief sales girl at the sale.

On Monday, a judge will decide if there’s enough evidence to order a trial for the man accused of burning the Roberts school. 24-year-old Justin Nelson of Roberts is charged with arson, burglary, and criminal damage – all felonies.
