Dry weather this week hasn't brought back widespread drought conditions

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - This week’s tinder dry field conditions in Wisconsin have not done anything to bring back the drought.

The U.S. Drought Monitor says almost 14 percent of the state’s land area is abnormally dry, same as a week ago.

The drought map shows dry conditions in the northwest and north central parts of the state, along a relatively narrow line from Somerset to Medford to Minocqua.

The DNR said logging equipment triggered the massive wildfire on Tuesday that covered a revised 8,100 acres in Douglas and Bayfield counties.

Officials said it was one of about 60 wildfires in Wisconsin this week. Open areas became much drier, increasing the risk for wildfires to high levels statewide.

Burning permits have been suspended throughout Wisconsin for now.

The National Weather Service says there’s a chance of rain every day through Sunday. Thunderstorms are likely on Monday.
