MILWAUKEE, WI (LEARFIELD-WSAU) U-W Milwaukee took all but one of the five season baseball awards in the Horizon League. Sophomore second baseman Michael Porcaro was named the league’s player-of-the-year yesterday.
Wisconsin Rapids native senior right-hander Jake Long was honored as the pitcher-of-the-year.
Redshirt freshman catcher Mitch Ghelfi is the league’s top newcomer. And Milwaukee’s Scott Doffek was named the Horizon coach-of-the-year for the second time in his career. He led the Panthers to their first regular season baseball crown since 2001, with the top seed at the league tournament this weekend in Niles Ohio.
Milwaukee will open against either Wright State or Youngstown State tomorrow. Porcaro leads the Horizon circuit with a .362 batting average and 40 runs scored.
Long is 7-and-3 with a league-leading one-point-eight-two E-R-A. He had a school record three shutouts in a dozen starts. Ghelfi hit a team-high .413 in his first active campaign.
