GREEN BAY, WI (LEARFIELD-WSAU) Sam Shields was a no-show yesterday, as the Green Bay Packers held their first public practice in their organized team activities. Shields, who was a restricted free agent this spring, has yet to sign a one-year tender offer of just over two-million dollars.
Teammate Morgan Burnett says he has kept in touch with Shields, and he’s expected to report soon. Shields had four interceptions and 11 pass break-ups in his final six games last season, but he still faces lots of competition for the starting corner job opposite Tramon Williams.
Casey Hayward led the Packers with six interceptions and 21 pass breakups as a rookie a year ago. Davon House is also in the mix, but he’s had injury problems.
Speaking of injuries, fourth-round offensive tackle J-C Tretter broke an ankle at the team’s first O-T-A workout on Monday. The Packers did not confirm the injury but his agent, Alan Herman, said one of Tretter’s cleats got caught in the ground during a fumble recovery drill. Herman said Tretter would have surgery, and could be out for six months.
