WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) - A long running sports tradition is almost here. The Gus Macker 3-on-3 basketball tournament is coming up soon. Set up begins June 10th, and actual play is June 15th and 16th at Wausau Newman and Wausau West High Schools.
Sean McNeal organizes the Gus Macker tournament. He says it is a great family-friendly activity that brings people to the community for more than just basketball. “Gus Macker is a 3-on-3 basketball, and I’m now calling it a festival, because through the years, we’ve gone more from just being a basketball tournament into food and entertainment and special events tied around the half court game of basketball I enjoyed in my driveway as a kid.”
This June will be Wausau’s 22nd year for the Gus Macker tournament, but McNeal says the whole thing started long before that at home. “It started in my mom and dad’s driveway in 1974, and this is our 40th anniversary this summer.”
The mail-in deadline for teams has now past, but teams can still register online. McNeal says they will match up teams based on age and ability into competitive brackets.
He says at his height, he appreciates having competitive divisions. “In not getting dunked on all of the time, and I’m very vertically challenged at 5 foot 6, so I know what that feels like, so I try to make the game fit any group of people that would like to play.”
Teams range from five and six year olds up to people in their 60’s. The teams that enter are all guaranteed three games, a t-shirt, and a lot of fun.
