Free fishing and other activities in Wisconsin this weekend

UNDATED (WXPR-WSAU)  -  Many outdoor activities in Wisconsin this weekend are 'free'...as the state is hosting a weekend where charges don't apply in many places, and no fishing license is needed.

Wisconsin residents and visitors can fish, hike, bike state trails for free, and ride public ATV trails at no charge. On Sunday, June 2 only, they can enjoy free admission to state parks and forests.

DNR aquatic education coordinator Theresa Stabo says this is the weekend to get outdoors. “We have a number of events at state parks and different local parks. These events are being put on by our friends in the fishing community whether they are park staff or fishing club members, we have a lot of opportunities for people who have never been fishing before to give it a try."

Dozens of free fishing clinics are scheduled over the two-day weekend, some of them at state parks and others sponsored by conservation groups, civic groups, or local parks and recreation departments. Most of the fishing clinics will provide the fishing equipment instruction and bait necessary.

A new interactive map helps guide people to dozens of easy trails or trail segments suitable for families with young children and for those looking for shorter, flatter trails. More information is on the DNR website.

Cops and Bobbers is one program offered to get kids out fishing during the free weekend. This event is coordinated through the Portage County Sheriff’s Department.  Activities start at Bukolt Park at 9:00 a.m. Saturday.

In Marathon County, children 5 and up are welcome to activities at D.C. Everest Park on Lake Wausau Saturday and Sunday, courtesy of the Wausau & Marathon County Public Park Systems.

The Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest is also "Kids Fishing Day" events on Saturday, June 1st.

The Lost Lake Campground in Florence County will have an event from noon to 4:00 p.m. . Families are encouraged to bring a small row boat, canoe, or kayak.
