Racine County feeling pinch from loss in food stamp funding

RACINE, WI (WTAQ) - Last week's ending of the temporary boost in food stamp benefits is hitting Racine County particularly hard.

The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities said almost 47,000 residents are seeing their benefits reduced in Racine County. That represents 24 percent of the county's total residents, and 43 percent of its children.

The budget center says the average cut is $11 a month for single recipients, and $29 a month for families of three. Those amounts started being given in 2009, as part of the Obama stimulus package at the height of the Great Recession.

Jonathan Delagrave, who heads the Racine County Human Services Department, says larger families might have to take a second look at the food they buy -- and perhaps cut out snacks and high fat foods to stretch their food dollars.

He also urged families not to lose their FoodShare cards -- because the administrative change over the benefits might make it harder and-or longer to replace them.
