STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WSAU) -- Portage County officials are looking for some volunteers to help transport veterans to the VA hospital.
It's a program that runs in association with the DAV and the Aging and Disability Resource Center to get vets where they need to go. Portage County transportation coordinator David Adamczak says the usually see a dip in their staff this time of year. "Some go south for the winter, head to Florida to spend their time. And we have a few volunteers that are doing some other endeavors right now so we have a decline in our volunteer staff right now."
Adamczak says they're not currently in any danger of not making trips. "We're looking for volunteers so we don't come up with that kind of crisis we're having to reschedule trips or anything because of lack of volunteers."
If you are thinking about volunteering, Adamczak says the process on driving isn't all that hard. "They would come here to the Lincoln, Center, pick one of the vehicles up, pick up the participants that are going to their VA appointments that day, drive them there and drive them back."
If you'd like to sign up for the program, call the ADRC at 715-346-1401.
