Conservative group asks Gov. Walker to throw out Common Core standards

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - Tea party leaders and other conservatives are asking their party's governor to, "be the hero" and throw out Wisconsin's Common Core public school standards.

That call was made in a letter sent Tuesday to Republican Governor Scott Walker.

It comes after a GOP-controlled review panel in the Assembly recommended last week that the three-year-old standards not be tossed out.

The study committee said the Common Core math and English guidelines should do more to protect student privacy -- and they should get a periodic review to make sure they're tailored to Wisconsin's brand of public education.

Wisconsin was among the first of 45 states to adopt the Common Core standards in 2010. Educators and others say the standards help students prepare better for college and work life.

Tea party conservatives and other critics say the standards are too weak, and they amount to a national curriculum.

Walker has said he'd like to see tougher standards. Assembly panel members agreed they could be improved, but they said too much has been invested to throw them out altogether.
