Kronenwetter police seek thieves in car thefts

KRONENWETTER, Wis. (WSAU) -- Kronenwetter police are reminding residents to lock their car doors after a rash of thefts in the area.

Lieutenant Terry McHugh says the criminals call it 'car shopping'. "And they just pull on handles, and anything that's unlocked is fair game. It's very rare that we see cars actually broken into. Much more common that they go into unlocked vehicles." The thieves are getting away with loose change, MP3 players, GPS devices and other items left inside the cars.

McHugh says criminals are going for the easy buck. "Generally when they go into these cars they're going to take anything and everything they can potentially turn around and get some money for." And the easiest way to stop the criminals is simply to secure your vehicle. "We can eliminate some of these crimes of opportunity, by just having these vehicles locked. If you leave this stuff out for them we're making it too easy."
