WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) -- A holiday decorating event is underway for a good cause. It’s the Festival of Trees, which is held each year as a fundraiser for Comfort Care and Hospice. Director Laura Pearson says it’s a week long silent auction and raffle for trees, centerpieces, wreaths, and other festive decorations. There is also things for the children to get involved with, like Santa’s workshop.

Pearson says this event is huge for them, since it supports their end-of-life care services. “Every year, the money that’s made at Festival of Trees goes to support two Community Care bedrooms at the Hospice House, and what that means is that people who either can’t afford to pay or maybe don’t have quite enough, they can use those monies to pay for their care at the house.”

Comfort Care and Hospice has been working towards certification for providing the special needs of veterans who need their services. One of the Festival of Trees items in the silent auction honors a veteran who recently passed away. “Our Veterans Committee worked with one of our patient’s families, who is a veteran, to put together a veteran’s tree. It ‘s a beautiful red, white, and blue, you can imagine, tree and in the back of that is a really nice memorial to the patient who helped sponsor the tree.”

Hospice House is part of the Aspirus Health system, in it’s own building on Wausau’s northwest side. The rooms, facilities, and gardens are designed to be more like home and less like a hospital.

The Festival of Trees is at the Stoney Creek Inn. It’s open Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

On Saturday, there’s a Teddy Bear Breakfast for the kids from 9:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. The displays are open from noon until 5:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

Sunday, there’s another Teddy Bear Breakfast from 10:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. with the Festival open from noon until 3:00 p.m.
