Chilly weather means best start in a decade for Granite Peak

RIB MOUNTAIN, Wis. (WSAU) -- The people that love winter sports have welcomed this past week’s chilly weather, especially skiers. Chris Pingle from Granite Peak Ski Area says the chilly weather has been great for them, as they already have seventeen runs and two terrain parks open. “As far as early season goes, I cannot even in the last ten years having this many runs open by Thanksgiving Day.”

All of that snow on a weekend with no school and plenty of out-of-town visitors should make it busy at Granite Peak this weekend, but Pingle says they’re ready. “It should be a pretty busy weekend, you know. We’re expecting a couple thousand people over the weekend into Sunday.”

Getting the slopes ready is a combination of good weather, hard work, and a bit of science. Pingle says it takes a lot of water and the right conditions. “We pump somewhere close to seven to eight million gallons in about twenty-four hours. We’re always looking for temperatures that are below thirty degrees, twenty-eight is usually prime. It also depends on the humidity that is in the air.”

Conditions are expected to be very good all weekend for skiing and snowboarding. Granite Peak will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Saturday and 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Sunday.
