ST. PAUL, MN (WCCO) - It took seventeen hours over two days for the jury of four women and eight men to reach a verdict late Wednesday afternoon. Trevino was found guilty of second-degree unintentional murder, but acquitted of a more serious charge of second-degree intentional murder.

Kira’s father, Jay Steger commented after the verdict was read and court was adjourned. “Now that we’ve got justice, soon we’ll get Kira home and we’ll give her a memorial, and maybe we can put our anguish to rest and heal.”

Trevino could face a maximum of forty years in prison. He’ll be sentenced in November.

Jay Steger commented, “If it was a hundred years, it wouldn’t have been enough, because we will never have our daughter back.”

Kira Steger disappeared in February and her body was found in the Mississippi River in May. Prosecutors argued Trevino killed Steger in an act of rage after finding out she’d been having an affair.

Trevino’s defense attorney John Conard reacted to the verdict. “What we need to do is respect the jury and the hard work that they did. We’re disappointed, and there’s not anybody involved with this case that’s isn’t hurting right now.”

The Steger family has not announced the date and location for Kira Steger’s memorial service.
