BURLINGTON, Wis (WSAU-Metro)  Racine County eighth graders expected to be waking up in Washington, D.C. this morning. Their field trip was canceled because of the government shutdown.

Students from St. Charles, St. Mary's and St. Thomas Aquinas Schools were supposed to have left for D.C. on Wednesday. But because hundreds of National Parks workers have been furloughed, most famous sites in the nation's Capitol are closed to visitors. School officials decided the trip should be postponed until after the federal government shutdown was over.

Officials hope to be able to make the trip next month. The dates have not been announced.
