WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) - It appears the story that broke Friday about Wausau schools cutting holiday concerts is far from over.
Late last week, Wausau schools announced the Master Singers would be disbanded and elementary holiday concerts are off. Superintendent Kathleen Williams plans to issue a statement Monday.
Music Director Phil Buch says the administration gave options of performing five non-religious songs for every religious song, have a concert with no holiday music, or postpone concerts past December. Instead, he chose none of the three options.
The source of this controversey is unclear. WSAU talk show host Jerry Bader reports that the Freedom From Religion Foundation in Madison, which has filed similar complaints in the past, is not the origin of this complaint.
School board members have not yet discussed the directive from administration and the apparent end of the Master Singers.
A group of holiday concert supporters has also started on online petition which asks the Wausau School District to reconsider their position, and let the Master Singers proceed with the material they've been rehearsing.
