WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) - The City of Wausau has been selected to receive an award for a riverfront district cleanup and redevelopment.

Brownfield Renewal Magazine recognized Wausau with their 2013 Economic Impact Award.

City Planner Brad Lenz told city council members the magazine scored Wausau highly for the east riverfront improvements. “It’s an award we won out of about thirteen sites, internationally, and includes the east riverfront property, basically Eye Clinic (of Wisconsin) south with the Dudley Tower, Riverside Place.”

The magazine looks at positive environmental impacts and job creation resulting from the cleanup and redevelopment of contaminated brownfield properties.

Lenz says the city will receive the award next year. “It’s really an honor that we received it, and we’ll be presented with a plaque at the 2014 Brownfield National Conference.”

Mayor Jim Tipple says the award recognized Wausau for redeveloping a one mile section of property along the river and speaks volumes to the economic impact of the project.
