UW System looking for ways to better help remedial college students

KENOSHA, WI (WTAQ) - The UW System will appoint a task force to look for the best and most efficient ways to serve college students who need remedial help.

University President Kevin Reilly told the Board of Regents at UW-Parkside Friday that he's concerned about the large numbers of college freshmen around the country who are being placed into remedial classes.

He says those students need more time to graduate, and they're spending more money in the process.

The task force will look at the UW's current policies, and then look at national studies to see what kind of new practices could work the best in Wisconsin.

About 1 of every 4 UW freshmen needed remedial help last year. That's about the same as the national average, and Reilly says the numbers have held steady for about the last five years.

He said about 1 of every 5 university freshmen needed extra math instruction. About 10 percent needed help in English, and 6 percent needed assistance for both areas.
