WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) - Governor Scott Walker travelled around Wisconsin Friday promoting a campaign to help developmentally disabled people become productive members of the workforce.
It’s a program by the Wisconsin Board for People with Developmental Disabilities called Take Your Legislator To Work. Walker stopped at Features Sports Bar and Grill in Holmen and Red Eye Brewing Company in Wausau to highlight the efforts of local employers and coordinators.
During a stop at Red Eye Brewing Company, Walker says they expanded on a theme demonstrated by Walgreens at the recent Small Business Summit. “It’s to really stress the abilities that people bring, and whether you’re a big corporation like Walgreens or you’re just a small business, whether it’s Red Eye Brewing Company or anybody else, it really is one of those great partnerships. Employers that are willing to look at the abilities that individuals can bring to the table, you can create these great partnerships where it’s a win-win, and provides employment at the same time it provides real value to the employer.”
This campaign emphasizes how everyone benefits when people with disabilities are employed in the community, where they are more likely to be independent, pay taxes, contribute to the local economy, and are less likely to rely on publicly-funded programs and services.
