STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WSAU) - Stevens Point's public works committee has approved a $339,000 remodel of Fire Station #1.
The winning bid went to Ellis Stone construction out of Stevens Point. The renovations would help improve the quality of life for the firefighters at the station by redoing bathroom and shower areas, along with other improvements. Fire chief Traci Kujawa says that includes making the bathrooms unisex to accommodate for female firefighters and EMS. "It'll be gender neutral, so that obviously anyone can use them, so there's some access to female employees up there."
The new bathrooms would feature separate restrooms and showers, sectioned off for privacy from each other. Kujawa says it's a quality of life issue. "Right now we just have men's facilities up there, so we're looking at including facilities for females." The new bathrooms and showers would go into place across the hall from the upstairs dorms in the fire station.
The remodel would also install new heating and ventilation in the downstairs training areas and do some finishing of walls.
The total bid for the project was $338,983 dollars.
