Stevens Point budget presented

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WSAU) - Stevens Point officials made their 2014 budget presentation Monday night.

City Comptroller-Treasurer Corey Laddick told WSAU taxpayers won’t see a rate increase. “It’s going to be a stable tax rate, so there’s not going to be an increase in property tax rates, which is something that we’re very proud of. We’re also going to add two additional police officers to allow for some more enforcement in that area to meet the needs of our community, and then we’re also looking at actually making extra payments to principal on our loans.”

The city’s proposed tax levy is $14,423,537 and the tax rate is $9.85 per thousand dollars worth of property valuation.

Laddick says the city will have to work to manage costs for things like workers compensation by improving safety for some tasks. He did say there is some good news for the city. “I think overall with this budget, we did get fairly lucky. We got extremely lucky on decreased pension contributions for our public safety workers. That really helped, and then also decreased health insurance costs. Those two things put together was about $440,000 dollars.”

The remaining mystery for the budget is what to pay certain employees. City Council members last week changed the parameters of a wage study, forcing consultants to change the averages in the study. That means when the Personnel Committee meets, they will not be able to further stall a decision on how to pay city employees at a competitive rate. The committee’s recommendation must be taken up at the November City Council meeting, since the budget must be acted on by law before a deadline.
