UWSP Planetarium hosts semi-annual laser light show fundraiser

by

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WSAU) - A blast from the past will help raise money for the UW-Stevens Point Planetarium this week.

The planetarium staff will be hosting laser light shows to raise funds for the facility's educational programs. Dr. Randy Olson says the event brings in a surprising number of people. "Peoples do have an interest in it, even yet today. It was something that people heard about in the 60s and 70s and it was a big deal back then, but now there is a resurgence of it."

Proceeds from the show go towards the purchase of new astronomical shows and other educational expenses. Those programs talking about the night sky can run up to $2,500, and Dr. Olson says they're happy to raise some money if people want to come out and experience the shows. "Since it does work, and we are able to garner some additional funds to run our educational programs, we're going to run it."

This year's shows include the classic Pink Floyd albums "The Wall" and "Dark Side of the Moon" as well as Laser Beatles and a special Halloween Fright Night showing. Tickets for the shows are $5 a person, and can be bought before the performance each night.
