WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) - Increased security is more and more common in schools. Wausau School District officials say everyone is adjusting quite well to their latest security measure... locked doors with a single secure point of entry.

Many schools have gone to locking their doors during the school day, and only allowing people into the building through the main entrance after being buzzed in by the central office. Director of Pupil Services Dr. Jeff Lindell says kids hardly noticed the change, and parents and staff are adjusting well. “You know, it’s all about change, and change is difficult but we have received a large amount of positive feedback from our parents, appreciative of our move towards locking our front doors. We have a small number of people that have expressed concerns, but the vast majority of the feedback we’ve received has been positive in nature.”

He says there have been a few complaints, but the comments in support of the locked doors far outweighs the complaints.

Lindell says the biggest adjustment is for office staff and the additional interruptions when the doorbell rings. “That’s been a challenge as well, because that’s been a change for them and it takes their focus away from other things, but I think by and large they understand what our purpose is, and the objective behind the change, and they’ve been supportive and certainly have changed how they do business a little bit, but they’ve been supportive.”

The Pupil Services Director says there are no additional safety measures being planned at this time, but they are often discussing ways to keep the children safer.
