PLOVER, Wis. (WSAU) - The name of yesterday’s victim in a crash on I-39 at Plover has been released. He was 65-year-old Leslie D. Kollauf from the Town of Hull near Stevens Point.
Portage County Sheriff’s Department deputies say Kollauf was northbound on I-39 by the Highway 54 exit when he lost control of his pickup truck and crashed at 5:25 p.m.
Investigators suspect he drifted off the right side of the highway and into the ditch, and then became airborne after hitting the embankment for the Highway 54 overpass. Kollauf’s vehicle launched into the bridge girder I-beam before falling and coming to rest on its roof, blocking the northbound I-39 traffic lanes.
He was airlifted from the scene, but succumbed to his injuries. Driver fatigue is suspected as a possible cause.
Traffic was rerouted around the scene for approximately one hour using the Highway 54 on and off ramps before and lane could be opened at the scene.
