STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WSAU) - A recent effort to raise money for another police dog was highly successful. A recent golf outing and sports memorabilia raffle was organized by Morey’s Bar. The volunteers also put together a reception and set up a dunk tank.
Morey’s owners Brenda and Bass Cote presented the Sheriff’s Department with a check for $7,056 from the events, which ran from August 17th through the final raffle item on September 17th.
Portage County Sheriff’s Department officials are trying to acquire a second K9 officer, since their present dog “Baco” and handler Daniel Wochowiak are on duty a week and then off duty for a week. Sheriff John Charewicz would like to have at least one dog available in the department all of the time.
Chief Deputy Daniel Kontos says it will cost about $15,000 to acquire another K9 for the department. Deputy John White will be the handler for the new deputy dog when they reach their financial goals.
