Rhinelander man bound over for trial in shooting of his uncle

RHINELANDER, Wis. (WXPR) - A Rhinelander man has been bound over for trial for the shooting of a relative.

23-year-old Marcus Alsteens is charged with attempted first-degree homicide for the August 12th incident at a home he shared with his uncle, Justin Alsteens. Police allege a fight over doing household chores led to the shooting. During a hearing to determine whether enough evidence exists to continue the case, Rhinelander police detective Brian Zohimsky said Alsteens allegedly told him he had a rifle he took out of a locked case and walked to his uncle's bedroom as he was questioned by Oneida County District Attorney Mike Schiek.  Schiek said, "That when he returned to Justin's bedroom with the gun, he remembered Justin was seated on the bed eating ice cream. Then the defendant told you he shot the victim, correct?” Zohimsky replied, “Yes." Judge Patrick O'Melia said there was enough evidence, including pictures and other evidence along with victim testimony. to bind Alsteens over for trial. Alsteens is also charged with injury by negligent use of a dangerous weapon, negligent handling of a weapon and aggravated battery, all with a domestic abuse rider. Alsteens next will enter a plea on October 7. He remains jailed on $50,000 cash bond.
