Lawmakers consider changing public school Common Core standards

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - State lawmakers will hold a hearing a week from Thursday on whether Wisconsin should continue using the national Common Core standards for public school students.

Newly-named committees in the Assembly and Senate are planning a seven hour public hearing from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. next Thursday at the Capitol.

Later hearing dates could be set elsewhere in Wisconsin.

Wednesday, Republican leaders in both houses created new panels to review and possibly repeal and replace the Common Core standards -- stronger goals for getting youngsters to achieve in math and reading.

Wisconsin adopted Common Core in 2010 -- but activists in both parties say they don't like a national curriculum, and they fear that the federal government will take over the preparing of lesson plans.

Tea Party activists and some Democrats in other states have raised similar concerns.

A spokesman for Senate Republican Paul Farrow of Pewaukee said there was very little discussion in 2010 when the new standards were adopted. He says it's being brought up again for, "residents who may see this as a controversial issue."
