NEILLSVILLE, WI (WTAQ) - About one-sixth of Wisconsin remains in a severe drought.

The U.S. Drought Monitor said Thursday that almost 17 percent of the state's land area is severely dry -- just over one percent less than a week ago.

West central Wisconsin is the driest, along the Wisconsin and St. Croix rivers between Vernon and Polk counties and eastward to around Neillsville and Adams-Friendship.

Almost 60 percent of the state's land area is abnormally dry or worse -- about a half-percent less than a week ago.

The only drought free areas are northeast of a line from Superior to Sheboygan, plus a small part of southwest Wisconsin in the Platteville area.

It's been dry all week throughout the state. Forecasters say our next chance of rain is on Saturday.
