WESTON, Wis. (WSAU) -- Wisconsin Public Service is taking another step in the process of closing down and changing some of the power plants in Weston.
The company announced today it's notified the regional power management group that Weston 1 will be shutting down and that Weston 2 will be changing to Natural Gas. The two plants are the older units at the Weston facility, and have been in operation for more than 50 to 60 years. Spokesperson Kelly Zagrzebski says there's environmental concerns to look at. "With the changes within the environmental regulations, you've got to look at them and take some time to evaluate it and decide if it's economical to change, refuel or retire, what's the best thing?"
Weston 1 will be retired by June 2015 and Weston 2 will switch fuels in 2015. Weston 2 was initially constructed with the capability to use natural gas as fuel. Units 3 and 4 will remain in operation.
