PITTSVILLE, Wis. (WSAU) -- A burn barrel fire led to a wildfire that scorched 34 acres near Pittsville Saturday afternoon.

The Pittsville, Vesper, and Rock Fire Departments were called just before 2:00 p.m. to the Town of Cary, and spent about three hours putting out the flames.

The fire began near a burning barrel, but quickly crossed a dry marsh, a field, and entered a pine plantation. The fire burned the ground debris, but did not severely damage the trees. There were no buildings damaged, and nobody got hurt. The fire affected three different property owners.

Many areas are under a burn ban due to the dry spring conditions. Firefighters and Department of Natural Resources officials urge everyone to check before burning, and if permits are issued, be cautious about airborne embers. You should also keep hoses ready and the ground around the burn barrels moist.
