UPDATE: Standoff situation in Wittenberg is over

WITTENBERG, Wis. (WSAU) -- The hostage situation in Wittenberg is over, and nobody was hurt.

Shawano County Sheriff Randy Wright says the 28-year-old male suspect is from the Gillett area. Wright says he walked into the McDonalds & Shell station just off the Highway 29 exit with a small caliber handgun.   “Our dispatch center first received a panic alarm, and then some phone calls from people from the Shell-McDonalds at the intersection of Highways 45 and 29, and said there was a subject inside the restaurant with a gun. People were allowed to leave, but there was also a time where there was a store employee that was held. Through negotiations, our negotiator was able to get the hostage released.”

The sheriff says the suspect was suffering from symptoms tied to severe depression.

Wright says everyone got out safely, and the the suspect is now in custody.  “Negotiations continued, and finally the subject came out without any incident. There was a gun that was left at the scene that we have recovered. A vehicle has been taken for impound, and the subject has been taken to a facility for evaluation.”

The hostage was a male employee of McDonalds, and Sheriff Wright says he handled the situation very well.  “Very well. Well composed, kept his calm throughout the whole incident, and I would say he did very well.”

Wright does not know if a certain incident triggered the suspects behavior. The sheriff does expect criminal charges to be filed against the man, but says that will be up to the District Attorney to determine exactly which charges to file.
