Film crew hopes to educate people about invasive species

RHINELANDER, Wis. (WXPR) -- A Chicago based documentary production crew will be in Rhinelander this weekend to look at the effort here to stop aquatic invasive species.

Oneida County AIS Coordinator Michele Sadauskas says the documentary is called "Making Waves Battle For The Great Lakes."  "We're hosting a film crew in the Rhinelander area. They're going to do some filming on the Clean Boats program because that program is so strong here in the Northwoods."

Clean Boats Clean Waters has volunteers and some paid staff working at boat landings to check to see that invasive species don't get transferred from one body of water to another.

Sadauskus says the producers want to show the public that invasive species are many and could create even more costly problems.  "And they're afraid so many other people are not aware of so many other invasives that infect a lot of our northern waters in the Great Lakes area, so they're hoping to create this documentary that talks a lot more than just Asian Carp. Eurasian Water Milfoil, Curly leaf Pondweed, Zebra Mussels, those type of invasives."

Sadauskas says they will be recording the workings of the Clean Boat Clean Waters volunteers to show a wider AIS problem to Chicago viewers who are primarily concerned about Asian Carp.
