UNDATED (WSAU) -- Voter turnout may be only about 15% statewide, but a four way battle for Sheriff in Portage County brought more voters to the polls. The opposite happened in Marathon County, where only 9.5% of eligible voters went to the polls.
With all 47 precincts in, Mike Lucas has won the primary election with 3,000 votes, followed by Kevin Sorenson with 2,770. Rob Golla had 2,379 votes and Jim Grubba had 259 votes.
A four candidates battled in a Democratic Primary to replace Portage County’s retiring Sheriff John Charewitz. There is no Republican candidate for Sheriff, so Lucas would be the favorite to win in November.
Another candidate could challenge Lucas with a write-in candidacy. That has happened before. Former Portage County Sheriff Peter Thrun lost the Democratic primary to challenger Stan Potocki in 1996. Thrun then waged an unsuccessful write-in campaign.
