Anti-heroin ad campaign coming to Badger games

MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) -- The campaign to raise awareness about heroin will be heard by sports fans very soon. Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen says their department’s campaign called “The Fly Effect” will have radio announcements broadcast during the Wisconsin Badger football games this season.

Van Hollen says the goal of the campaign is prevention, and they want to reach young people to prevent them from ever experimenting with heroin to prevent more deaths. He’s hopeful that reaching out to the Badger sports audience will get the message out to all age groups, and prompt parents to have a conversation with their children about the dangers of drugs.

Heroin is not the only opiate drug the campaign focuses on. Pain pills such as Oxycontin and Oxycodone are addictive and often abused. Department of Health Services Secretary Kitty Rhodes says Wisconsin had more deaths from opiates in 2012 than traffic crashes.

The state participates in a drug take back initiative where people can safely dispose of unwanted medicines including narcotic pain pills. The next one is coming up September 27th.
