WASHINGTON, D.C. (WSAU) -- Veterans could soon see a new perk when they go on vacation. A bipartisan group of Congressmen have signed on to support the Wounded Veterans Recreation Act.
Congressman Ron Kind says the legislation, if passed, would provide a no-cost lifetime pass for veterans with service-connected disabilities to use our national parks. “I think it’s the least that we can do to express our gratitude and our thanks to these soldiers who are coming home now with certain disabilities, with certain needs that they have.” Kind added, “I think it’s another token of appreciation which is long overdue.”
According to the 2011 U.S. Census, there are 21.5 million military veterans in the U.S. Over 3.5 million of those veterans are living with a service-connected disability, and would benefit from this legislation to use over 2,000 national parks and federal recreational lands.
