Frost causes record number of broken water mains in Marshfield

MARSHFIELD, Wis. (WSAU) -- The cold weather has caused a record number of broken water mains in Marshfield this winter.

That’s according to Marshfield’s Water Superintendent Dave Wasserburger who says January was a rough month for his hard working crew. According to Wasserburger, “In the month of January we had 16 water main breaks.” That’s about triple the usual number, with Wasserburger reporting five in 2011 and six in 2012.

Pipes made from around 1945 to 1968 are breaking the most, not due to their age but to the material used to manufacture the pipes.

Main breaks usually take between four and five hours to fix.
