MADISON, Wis. - (WNS) - January is Wisconsin's coldest month, with the average high temperature below freezing every day. You can pretty much count on at least one really cold snap in January.

Pam Moen of AAA Wisconsin said it's wise to pay attention to the forecast and be sure your car is ready for the deep freeze.

"Make sure your tires especially, your battery and your windshield wipers are in good working order," Moen advised. "Those are the things that often get us in trouble. AAA sees more failed batteries than almost anything else in the wintertime."

Moen added to make sure your cell phone is fully charged before taking a trip in the dead of winter.

Accidents often happen when people are in a hurry to get someplace and are trying to drive faster than road or traffic conditions allow, she pointed out.

The primary rule, whether roads are in good or bad condition, is do not drink and drive, she warned.

"Forty percent of all the fatalities in crashes that happen to people here in Wisconsin could absolutely be prevented if people would not get behind the wheel after they've been drinking," Moen stressed.
