WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) - The shooting at a Wausau bar early Friday morning has now turned into a homicide investigation. That’s because the 27-year-old victim died at Aspirus Wausau Hospital.
Wausau Police initially could not be reached for comment, and hospital officials declined to say the condition of the victim. WSAU was given the victim’s name and the fact that he died from a source outside of law enforcement. Shortly after WSAU reported the man’s death, Wausau Police issued a statement confirming the victim died at about 6:00 p.m. The name is being withheld until family members have been properly notified.
Police apprehended 31-year-old John M. Lewis at about 7:30 a.m. in a Wausau house without incident. He remains in custody on a probation hold, and is likely to have new homicide charges added to his lengthy criminal history. Lewis has been to prison more than once in the past decade, and has been involved in cocaine, marijuana, and heroin trafficking. He is presently awaiting a March plea and sentencing on his latest drug charges.
Wausau Police Captain Gregory Hagenbucher says their investigators spent a lot of time Friday interviewing witnesses to the fight and shooting. Police are still trying to locate the weapon.
