Snow emergency overnight

by

UNDATED (WSAU) -- Nearly every community in central and north central Wisconsin is under a snow emergency Wednesday morning. Community officials called for the snow emergency to get vehicles off the streets so plows can clear the large amount of snow that arrived Tuesday afternoon.

Many highway departments had crews out all day Tuesday, forcing them to rest their drivers overnight, so they can go back in the plow trucks early Wednesday morning. The Village of Weston, for example, pulled plows off the roads from 9:00 p.m. until 4:00 a.m.

Many schools and businesses closed early Tuesday, but most school districts are anticipating they will be open, even if they start a little later than usual. We have a list of postponements and cancellations for you on our website, WSAU.com.

The snow caused many slide-offs, several crashes, and two major incidents... the 20 vehicle pileup on I-39 northbound near Knowlton and the car versus propane truck crash in Oneida County that killed three people.

During the evening hours, another crash on Highway 29 westbound at Marathon City caused deputies to reroute traffic just before 11:00 p.m.

Along with the highway problems, Central Wisconsin Airport had two flights cancelled and some delays as well.
