Wausau parks committee meets tonight on foul balls, prospecting

WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) -- Wausau's parks committee will be going over some summer developments tonight at city hall.

One of the topics that might surprise people is prospecting. The issue of whether or not gold hunters might damage sensitive waterways has been coming up across the county and the state. Parks committee chair Dave Overbeck says the city and the county are concerned over the possible damage that could be done to river and stream beds. "I guess we want to be proactive in looking at this and see what can be put in place to protect our natural resources." Overbeck says they aren't worried about people who are prospecting in city parks with metal detectors.

Also on the agenda is the number of foul balls coming out of the new Athletic Park. Overbeck says there's already been an incident where someone was hit by a ball in the new park nearby, and the committee wants to go over possible ways of keeping people safe nearby. "One might be installing some netting like what's behind the catcher over some of the areas to protect people where they're unknowingly playing or where kids are."

The committee will also get an update on how the River's Edge Trail is progressing. "Generally an update with where we are with that, some of the things that are happening with construction on the riverfront, and then to just maintain the progress of that project."

Tonight's meeting gets underway at 5:15 pm in the upstairs board room at City Hall.
