WESTON, Wis. (WSAU) -- A special running and walking event takes place this weekend to remember a former DC Everest cross country athlete. It’s the Forrest Goetsch Memorial Run, which is actually a walking and running event with a choice of going two miles or five miles.

Steve Goetsch says Forrest Goetsch was 14-years-old when an unpredictable cardiac rupture took his life.  “Well, Forrest was my son, and he passed away on September 21st of 2009 during warm up for cross country practice at the DC Everest track. You know, it was something unexpected to us, not knowing anything was going on.”

Forrest’s father Steve Goetsch says the community reached out to his family, and Forrest’s Run is a great way to both remember his son and give back to the community.  “The good thing for not only us, but I think it happens to many of us out there, that we’re blessed to be surrounded by a lot of people out there that care about you and with that, they reached out their hand and helped us through this, and this is a great way not only to remember Forrest but also to say thanks for all of those around us.”

Steve Goetsch says many sponsors have made the scholarship program successful, and made it possible to expand through Forrest’s Run.  “The money that we do raise from Forrest’s Run, this year we gave out $5,000 dollars in scholarships to area high school students as the Forrest Goetsch Memorial Scholarship, and we are giving out another $7,000 dollars in scholarships that’s going to be this Saturday at the run. That’s the Forrest Goetsch Cross Country Scholarship that we are introducing for the first time this year.”

The new scholarships associated with Forrest’s Run will help recognize the achievements of other cross country runners as they go on for higher education.  “We are going to recognize one male and one female from area high schools, East, West, Everest, and Mosinee, that have cross country programs, and the male and female will each get $2,000 dollars each, and each nominee from the other schools will get $500 dollars each.”

The run and walk events start at 9:00 a.m. Saturday at Dale’s Weston Lanes. There is also a Friday evening fish boil and registration opportunity at the site. The course is flat and open to individuals and teams. Chip timing, music, and refreshments will be served. Registration costs $30.00, and information is available at their website
