Kind supports propane reserve, opposes Keystone Pipeline

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WSAU) -- The recent propane crisis is still a discussion item in Congress. Wisconsin’s 3rd District Congressman Ron Kind says he and others have been working on some short term solutions, but Kind says we need a better plan going forward. “I’ve been working with the administration on hours-of-service rules to make it easier to transport propane to the high shortage areas. There was a pipeline that we got reversed. (It was) sending propane down to Texas. That now is coming up to the midwest where we have severe shortages. Ultimately, we need a longer term strategy so we don’t get caught flat-footed again.”

The high fall demand for propane was part of the problem, but combined with the supply bottleneck and the lack of stored reserves hit the midwest with a propane shortage like it’s never seen before. Kind would like to see a reserve put in place. “One of the things I’ve been trying to work with the administration on is a national petroleum and propane reserve, so when we have a big freeze and shortages like this, we have a reserve to fall back on.”

Other energy costs are staying high as well. Some say building the Keystone Pipeline to bring in Canadian tar sands oil will help the U.S. supply and lower the prices. Kind doesn’t believe it, and doesn’t support building the pipeline. “Fifteen of the largest seventeen contracts are all destined for export markets, so if anyone thinks that building the Keystone is going to have any domestic impact on our fuel costs are, I think, fooling themselves. This is going to be shipped overseas to China, to India, and to other countries, and we’re not going to get any benefit from it.”
