WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) -- Wausau’s Police and Fire Commission has narrowed down over fifty applicants for Fire Chief. Human Resources Director Michael Loy can't say who they are yet, but one of them is Stevens Point Fire Chief Tracey Kujawa.
Loy says the consultant hired by the city will contact the three finalists Thursday to see if they wish to continue through the final interview steps. Loy says they want to get through the process so they can make their final recommendation by early next month.
Loy says they received applications from around the country, but the finalists are from the midwest, with two from Wisconsin and one from Illinois.
Mayor Andrew Halverson confirmed that Kujawa is a finalist. He says Kujawa is an excellent chief, and understands why she applied... but he's hoping she stays in Stevens Point.
The next fire chief will replace Gary Buchberger, who retired January 31st after 16 years of leading the department.
