CINCINNATI, Wis. (WSAU) -- The Wisconsin Badgers hockey season is over.

The Badgers lost to the University of North Dakota in the NCAA regional round at Cincinnati by a score of 5-2.

The game was close, but North Dakota scored two empty net goals in the last minute and a half. Wisconsin had pulled goalie Joel Rumpel to put the extra attacker on the ice only to have it backfire. North Dakota’s first empty net goal slid nearly the entire length of the rink into the unattended net, making it 4-2. Rocco Grimaldi had three of North Dakota’s goals including both empty net scores.

The Badger penalty kill effort was perfect in the playoffs, but it wasn’t enough to get the win.

North Dakota will play Ferris State Saturday in the Midwest Regional Final game for the right to advance to the Frozen Four.

Jed Soloway got his first goal in a Badger uniform in the losing cause.

Nine Badger seniors wrapped up their collegiate hockey career in the contest.

North Dakota and Wisconsin played each other every year during the regular season in the old Western Collegiate Hockey Association, but with the Badgers joining the Big Ten this year, this was the first time the old rivals skated against each other this season.
