Taxpayer bill for voter ID court battle expected to take some time

MILWAUKEE (WTAQ) - It might be awhile before we find out how much taxpayers might have to give lawyers who sued over Wisconsin's photo ID law for voting.  

Federal Judge Lynn Adelman has agreed to wait until an appeal is decided upon, before saying how much -- if any -- of the plaintiffs' legal fees should be covered.  

Recent reports said the legal fees could exceed $1 million.

Adelman recently struck down the state's voter ID law from 2011, saying that minorities would have a harder time than others to get the ID's they need at polling places.  

State Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen has promised to appeal that ruling. It's a civil rights case -- which means that the government pays the plaintiffs' legal fees if they prevail.
