Facebook photograph leads to Tomahawk man's citation

MERRILL, Wis. (WSAU) -- Yes, the police can solve crimes with evidence posted on social media. That’s exactly what happened in Lincoln County this past week.

A Lincoln County deputy sheriff used social media to find the person who abandoned an ice shack. During late April, the Town of Harrison notified the DNR that an ice shack that had been torn apart had been left blocking the boat landing on Seven Island Lake. When the town went to dispose of the shack, they found a picture inside of a man holding onto a fish.

The deputy posted the picture on the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department Facebook page, and within hours the 30-year-old Tomahawk man in the picture phoned the department and admitted he had left his ice shack behind after his truck had broken down. He never went back to retrieve the shack. The man will face a citation for littering and will get a bill for the cleanup.

His name was not disclosed.
