New dean selected for Wausau Medical College of Wisconsin campus

WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) -- The director of an Oregon medical training group will be the dean at the Wausau campus of the Medical College of Wisconsin.

Lisa Grill Dodson was named Wednesday as the first dean of the school. She’s been the head of the Oregon Area Health Education Center since 2006. Dodson says this will be a great chance to start a brand new school in the region. We tend to start with youngsters and really help them with math and science training in the high school and college years, work with them to select appropriate colleges to attend, and then hopefully attend medical school in their home.”

The Medical College will be using partnerships with area medical centers and educational programs to help train MD’s in the Wausau area. The hope of the program is that local education will keep MD’s and practitioners local once they graduate from the school. “And we do know that for students that attend medical school and residency in the region, there’s a 70 percent retention rate as opposed to less than 50 percent for either one alone.”

Dodson says she’s happy to see an advisory board already in place for the college to help get the program started the right way. “That part of my job was done first, which makes it a whole lot easier, because I can step in and have a panel of leaders who are ready to help and point me in the right direction.”

The first students are expected to start their training in the fall of 2016.
