WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) — A Wausau family escaped a fire that destroyed a garage at their home and the two vehicles inside.
The fire started Sunday just after 4 o’clock. Crews were called to the corner of Chellis Street and 11th Avenue. Firefighters were able to put out the blaze in about 20 minutes.
Battalion Chief Allan Antolik of the Wausau Fire Department told WAOW television the high winds made fighting the fire challenging. “We did have a fully involved garage fire. Engine 1 came in here, tried to make an attack. Winds were a factor. We had heavy winds, which actually pushed the fires back through the garage.”
A 17-year-old boy that lives at the house was able to run inside and bring his baby sister out to safety. The other sister escaped on her own.
Investigators are still determining the cause of the fire.
