More road construction projects could get underway this week in central Wisconsin.
Kristin McHugh from the Department of Transportation says along with the existing Highway 29 and I-39 projects already underway, motorists will have more orange barrels to slow down for by the end of the week. “One of the projects that’s going to get started soon is Highway 10 on the western side of Wood County. We’ll be doing some resurfacing and culvert replacements. There will be a detour associated with that, not right away, but at some point, so that project is going to be getting started soon. We also have some resurfacing work that’s going to be getting started up in Lincoln and Langlade counties on Highway 17.”
Motorists can expect single lane closures on southbound US 51 at WIS 52 in Wausau and on eastbound WIS 29 at the US 51/WIS 29 east interchange in Rib Mountain beginning Tuesday, April 28. The lane closures are necessary for crews to complete routine bridge maintenance.
Most construction zones have construction workers just a few feet away from driving lanes, and there are usually lane shifts, narrow lanes, and no road shoulders in work zones. McHugh says you have to be careful. “I think what’s really important is to be paying close attention to the posted speed limits through those work zones. We need to make sure people are slowing down and being cautious as they move through there.”
Also, fines double in work zones, so speeding or breaking another traffic law will get very expensive.
