WOODRUFF, Wis. (WXPR) — The cold weather in the past month has resulted in a large number of house fires in the region.
John Grosman of Woodruff is a local volunteer for the American Red Cross Disaster Action Team. After the fire departments, they’re the next line of support for people who have had to leave their homes due to fire.
Grosman says besides insurance, people should have a plan to escape their home should fire strike. In the 1950’s his family lost their home in Sugar Camp. He says the Red Cross mission at that point is to give the people some quick help. “Ultimately, folks who experience a home fire disaster, or disasters of various forms, water disasters or folks impacted by severe weather, or so on, you get disconnected from all your connectivities in life.”
He said his family mistakenly tried to fight the fire at their home instead of trying to get out of the home. Everyone fortunately got out safely in his fire, but he says you should have a plan in place to evacuate should fire strike.
Grosman says the Red Cross in this region is in need of volunteers to help out. You can find out more by going to their website at red cross dot org.
