MARSHFIELD, Wis (WSAU) — City leaders in Marshfield are considering a plan to develop a city-owned “housing subdivision,” designed to facilitate the construction of more medium-priced new homes, and to help close a recently identified “housing gap” in the city.
Mayor Chris Meyer says the city would purchase land and develop infrastructure for the subdivision to help generate low cost lots which means more homes in the target price range of $125,000 to $200,000. According to Meyer, “By paying for the infrastructure as a community in that subdivision, we get get the lot price down, which get the house price down to an area that is in this zone that we identified in the housing study.”
A recent housing study found the need for more new homes in that identified $125,000 to $200,000 price range, in order for the city to keep pace with its economic development potential.
Marshfield’s Common Council agreed to keep exploring the proposed plan, which Planning and Economic Development director Jason Angell said is still in a very early developmental stage, and would need the cooperation of the Wood County Board to proceed.
